As you say, the disciples needed to recognize Him, and He obviously meant to say something by His wounds. <br /><br />It's ironic that many Christians have taken the corpus (the body) off the cross and only permit depicting Jesus without His wounds. By contrast, Jesus Himself never suggested doing this. He constantly harped on bearing the cross and on the necessary suffering to be endured by every one of His disciples. And, to top it off, He keeps His wounds and allowed--insisted even!--that Thomas put his hand into the wounds. One can may easily infer that Christ wants all Christians to do the same, to touch his wounds and remember Jesus not the One who resurrected, but as the One who suffered.
