Key takeaways
“Keep us from all adversity” is not a prayer for comfort, it is a prayer for freedom of heart.
Comfort can feel safe, while it can also leave you unfulfilled.
God notices sacrifice, even when it looks small.
The “magic” you want is often on the other side of the work you keep postponing.
Pain may not disappear, while no one should face it alone.
A Deceptive Opening Prayer
My dear brothers and sisters, today is a tough one. Do not be fooled by the opening prayer. “Almighty and merciful God, graciously keep from us all adversity.”
Let’s stop right there.
“Merciful God, keep from us all adversity.” At first, I thought what you thought. “Oh yes Lord, take away any pain and suffering. Allow me to live a comfortable life.” Then we hear the Gospel. “Beware the scribes who go around in long robes and accept greetings in marketplaces, seats of honor in synagogues (at Mary Immaculate), places of honor at banquets. They will receive a very severe condemnation.”
God forbid.
So what is the problem? The problem is very simple.
Accepting the Challenge Instead of Chasing Comfort
Before we get into it, let’s recognize the children’s choir, especially the children who sang the solo parts. It is more comfortable, and more safe, and less challenging, to blend in. It takes something else to accept the challenge.
That is what this is all about today, to accept the challenge. I have been reflecting on this because it is so easy to get comfortable. I have been thinking a lot about retirement. I thought, I will get a place near the beach. I would like a place where I can see the sunrise. I can see it now, with my Italian espresso, watching the sunrise, watching the sunset. Maybe I would have a good book. I would go for a walk along the beach. I would bake, and make my own pizzas, and homemade pasta. Maybe I’d volunteer in things I enjoy.
Imagine doing that every day. Would you feel fulfilled? No. We were not made for that. We were made to work. We were made to challenge ourselves. We were made to give ourselves to others for something meaningful and purposeful. If it is difficult, all the better.
“No Pain, No Gain”
You have heard the phrase “no pain, no gain.” For me, it went in one ear and out the other. Then I met an Olympian gymnast, Madison Kocian.
She is a member of All Saints. She won two gold medals in Brazil, I believe. She told me, “Father, the dream works only if you do.”
The dream works if you work. Then I came across another quote, and it hit me in the heart. “The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.” You want some magic in your life?
Get to work.
The Widows in Scripture
In the first reading today, there is a widow. In the Gospel today, there is also a widow. Widows had a tough life.
Have you ever asked yourself why the people who are the most faithful are often the ones who suffer the most? Why? And why can’t we get a teenager in this church?
Because they are strong. They are energetic. They have it all. They are make their Tiktok’s, their Instagrams, they travel, they have a great time. They show the world the places they are going, the dances they know, the things that are about themselves.
Why is it that the people who suffer are the ones that go to church? Why are they the ones who, like the widow, continue to believe?
The Widow, the Prophet, and the Miracle of “Enough”
This reading is so beautiful. This widow was young, because she had a young son. A prophet goes up to her and says, “Can you get me a glass of water?”
The widow says, “I will.” While she is going to get the water, he says, “By the way, get me something to eat too. Prepare something for me to eat.” The widow says she only has a little, but she will prepare something. In fact, she was going to prepare something for her son, and after that, they were going to die.
They had nothing left.
And what does the prophet say?
“The jar of flour will never go empty.”
“The oil will never run dry.”
“As God is my witness, the rain will fall upon the earth before it goes dry.”
She saw the magic.
She saw the miracle, what we call grace.
Growing Up Spiritually
The problem is that we can carry an idea of God that says, “If God is good, life should be easy.” We have to stop being naive.
Is life on earth tough? Yes. I have to reconcile a tough life on earth with a good God.
The way I figure it out is this: I was made to be tough. I was made to work, because I can make a difference in someone’s life.
What are the two commandments?
Love God above all things, and love your neighbor as yourself. We were born to be tough, like God. We were born to know what it means to love.
How can you learn how to love if you do not go through tough times?
How can you learn how to love if you do not help people who are going through tough times?
If all of us were living on the beach and walking on the beach every day, how do you learn how to love?
How do you overcome your fears? How do you grow up?
That is why life is not easy on earth. It was never meant to be. We are never going to eliminate pain and suffering on earth. What we should be able to eliminate is being alone with pain and suffering.
Why?
Because someone is working for you.
Someone is helping you.
Someone is making the sacrifice.
Someone is showing their love.
You learn from them, and you can do the same for others.
The Widow’s Two Coins
The widow who puts in her two coins, that is why this Gospel is so important.
This woman put in her last savings. It was not a lot. But what is beautiful is this.
God noticed.
God notices the sacrifices, and the love we share with others. The Lord is giving us a challenge.
“The magic that you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.”
Accept the challenge, and see the miracle.
Finishing the Prayer: Kept from Adversity, for a Purpose
I never finished the opening prayer.
“Keep us from all adversity.”
For what?
“So that we may pursue in freedom of heart the things that are yours.”
What happens when we sin? The devil always says, “Where are you going? What are you trying to do? Don’t you know who you are? Get back in your corner.” EWhen the Lord helps us to be healthy in heart, mind, body, and soul, then we are all his.
That is when we are able to do the things that are his.
Get to work for God. We can always work for Him, every single day.
Amen?
